Normal (non-accelerated) instrument course is also available, and is charged by an hourly rate for instructor, simulator, and aircraft.

In our seven day instrument course we will spend our days immersed in the fundamentals of IFR flight. We don't provide you with just enough training to pass the check ride, but teach you how to use the latest technology to be comfortable in a real world IFR situation. Expect to fly a wide variety of approaches; DME arcs, RNAV (GPS WAAS approaches), and localizer back courses. Unlike most flight schools, we will file actual IFR flight plans every time we fly so that you will be comfortable with the process.

 

Our iGATE advanced ATD is an indispensable tool that will enable you to learn more efficiently and effectively, allowing you to experience various emergency flight scenarios, while learning to analyze and manage these situations, even while flying approaches at airports all over the country. Up to 20 hours can be logged on the iGATE towards the 40 hour minimum requirement. We will utilize your aircraft (or ours for the additional hourly rate) for the remaining 10 hours.

 

Prerequisites:

FAA written test passed in previous 24 months

10 hours of simulated or actual instrument time in airplane

47 hours of PIC cross country time

 

Please keep in mind that the more preparation a student does prior to arriving for the course, the more likely the course can be completed in 7 days, sometimes even less.

7 Day Course includes:

7 Days of instruction

Unlimited training in flight training device. (for 7 days during normal work hours)

Training in your aircraft (or ours for additional rental charge)

A visit to the air traffic control tower and radar facility to help you with your understanding of the IFR infrastructure

 

Study Materials

There's a lot of great information here, the more you understand before arriving, the easier the course will be for you and the better your potential for success. We will not have time to cover every aspect of IFR flight, so you will be expected to be as prepared as possible before you arrived. If you need to complete the written test here, plan to arrive a day sooner to fit this into the schedule. We also recommend that you pick up a copy of the Instrument Oral Exam Guide . This books has all the questions and answers that you may expect to encounter on you check ride. For the written exam, we recommend King Schools test prep videos. For additional material, order a copy of Rod Machado's IFR textbook. This combination is great for learning what you need to know.

Most of you have probably not used an E6B or a plotter since you were a student pilot. Rather than relearn these tools, we recommend that you purchase and familiarize yourself with Foreflight or Garmin Pilot on your iPad. Yes, you can use these to plan your sample flight for your check ride. We encourage you to use it for all your flight planning, VFR and IFR, and become familiar with its functions prior to arriving for your training. It is important that you understand the basic concepts of flight planning such as calculating ground speed, wind correction, route planning, etc., but it is also important that you understand how to use the latest planning tools so that you can quickly plan your route and examine alternatives.

 

U.S. citizens wishing to complete training for a new or additional certificate or rating in an aircraft weighing less than 12,500 pounds must present the flight school or flight instructor with evidence of U.S. citizenship. Evidence must be shown by one of the following:

• Valid unexpired U.S. passport

• Original birth certificate and government-issued picture ID

• Original certification of birth abroad (Form FS-545 or DS-1350) and government-issued picture ID

• Original certificate of U.S. citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561) and government-issued picture ID

Please call 208-869-7450 or email us to schedule training. Reservations are taken on a first come, first served basis and are often booked two or more months in advance. Plan accordingly.

 

A $1000 non refundable deposit is required to reserve a date for the 7 day IFR courses,

with the balance due when you arrive for training. Although the balance

is not refundable, it can be used for another course within 8 months.

If you cancel within 5 days of your scheduled appointment, full payment

of the course will be required prior to rescheduling.

Rental Car

Having your own transportation isn't required, but keep in mind that you will have more time for studying and seeing the local area if you rent one. Shuttle services are available, but may require extra planning and limit your options for meals. Rental cars are available at Jackson Jet Center (208-383-3300) which is very convenient if you are flying your own aircraft in. Alamo seems to have good rates, but check around.
